‘SNL’ Hires First Black Female Cast Member In Five Years


The people spoke out, and SNL answered.
Last year, the popular late night sketch comedy show came under fire for the lack of diversity on set after folks realized that there hadn’t been a woman of color on the show since Maya Rudolph left back in 2007. In response to the criticism, the show invited 12 hilarious women (including Bresha Web of ‘Love That Girl’) to attend secret auditions held in New York City which resulted in University of Virginia alumni Sasheer Zamata walking away with a spot on the show. The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre comedienne will be making her debut on January 18 with Drake as the musical guest. Last year, Kenan Thompson defended the show’s lack of diversity by saying that there hasn’t been any female black comediennes on the show because they have a hard time finding women who are ready: “It’s just a tough part of the business. Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.”
during a November episode of ‘SNL’, the producers mocked the diversity issue by having Kerry Washington switch wigs several times during a skit to play Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, and Beyonce. Afterward, the skit, they ran these words:
